Run like on clouds - with ON Running shoes
Switzerland is considered one of the most innovative countries in the world, and it's no different when it comes to running shoe technology, as the young label On Running impressively proves. After retiring from professional sports, multiple duathlon world champion and six-time Ironman winner Olivier Bernhard set out in search of the perfect running experience. Together with like-minded ETH engineer David Allemann, he spent several years developing a revolutionary running shoe technology that sent the running scene into a state of euphoria and helped numerous top athletes achieve new best times - the Cloudtec system. The name says it all: running like on clouds - lighter, more comfortable, more efficient. It's hard to believe that this dreamlike success story began with a standard garden hose.
The basic idea behind the Cloudtec technology is as simple as it is ingenious: soft landing, hard push-off. For the first prototype, a cut-up garden hose glued to the sole of the shoe provided the necessary cushioning. In 2010, the creative friends finally founded the company On Running, whose stated goal is to bring back the fun of running. When a prototype of the running shoes won the ispo BrandNew Award in the same year and marathon legend Tegla Loroupe became an enthusiastic brand ambassador, the final breakthrough for On Running came. Today, the innovative label is represented in more than 25 countries and, in addition to its headquarters in Zurich, has opened a second location in the American sports brand mecca of Portland.
Whether a novice runner, hobby jogger or competitive professional, no runner is average. That makes it all the more difficult to develop running shoe technology that caters to millions of individual running personalities. This is where the patented Cloudtec system comes in: instead of a stiff sole, On Running shoes have a large number of flexible rubber elements (clouds) on the outsole that react to the individual running movement. Upon impact, they dampen vertical and horizontal forces to provide soft cushioning, then close up to form a firm base for a direct, hard push-off. As a result, On Running shoes not only provide a completely new, all-natural running sensation. They also activate the muscles during running and stabilize the running movement without additional supports, so that pain and injuries are avoided. Meanwhile, On Running offers a wide range of ultra-light running shoes for every running level, from top cushioned entry-level models like the Cloudster to fast performance running shoes like the Cloudracer. And that's not all: some particularly popular models like the Cloud are even conquering the sneaker stores and are now competing with lifestyle shoes.
